Stump grinding looks like a simple job and usually is — right up until the grinder cannot get to the stump. Access is the variable most quotes hinge on.
We do not publish price ranges, because an honest number depends on the tree in front of us. Every estimate is free, given in writing after we walk the site, and fixed before the saws come out.
What determines the price
Diameter at grade
We price by the width of the stump where it meets the soil, not the height of the tree it came from.
Root flare and surface roots
A wide flare or a multi-trunk clump means grinding well past the visible stump so you can re-sod or replant.
Gate and yard access
A stump reachable from the driveway is the cheapest case. Narrow gates, stairs and slopes on Golden and Green Mountain lots may require a smaller walk-behind machine and more time.
Grinding depth
Standard is 6-8 inches below grade for sod or replanting. Going deeper for a patio, footing or concrete pour takes longer.
Number of stumps
Multiple stumps in one visit cost less each — the machine, trailer and travel are already paid for.
Rock, fill and hidden metal
Front Range yards hide river rock, old fence posts and rebar. Damaged teeth slow the job, so we probe before grinding.
Grindings and backfill
Leaving the grindings on site is free. Hauling them out and backfilling with topsoil is extra material and labor.
Utility locates
Shallow irrigation, gas and low-voltage lines near a stump require locates and hand work — common in older Denver and Wheat Ridge yards.
How to keep the number down
- Grind the stump during the removal visit instead of booking a second trip
- Group every stump in the yard into one appointment
- Keep the grindings on site as mulch or backfill
- Measure your gate opening and tell us — it lets us bring the right machine the first time
- Flag sprinkler heads and low-voltage lighting before we arrive
Cost questions we get
How deep do you grind?
6-8 inches below grade as standard, which is enough to re-sod, seed or plant most replacements. We grind deeper on request when you are pouring concrete or setting a footing.
Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?
Not directly in the old root plate. Grindings acidify and tie up nitrogen as they break down. We recommend removing the grindings, backfilling with topsoil, and planting a few feet off center.
Will grinding kill the remaining roots?
Grinding removes the stump and the flare; the lateral roots decay on their own over several years. Species that sucker, such as elm and cottonwood, may push shoots for a season.
Do you repair the lawn?
We rake and clean the area and can backfill with topsoil. Sod and seed are available on request but quoted separately.
